The early kick off took place at Victoria Park where a high-tempo playing Buckie Thistle defeated Forres Mechanics 2-0 and it may have been a cricket score if it wasn’t for goalie Mark Bowden’s outstanding display. The Jags controlled the match and made a great recovery from Tuesday’s Aberdeenshire Shield loss to Fraserburgh.
The hosts threatened from the start with Chris Angus cutting inside to send in a powerful strike which keeper Mark Bowden blocked with his legs after a shaky beginning from the stopper, who featured for the first time since July due to other goalie Stuart Knight being on great form for the Cans Cans.
At the other end the visitors created a superb chance to take the lead after some magical build up play down the left flank. Kris Duncan played a perfect cross into the feet of Dachi Khutsishvili who was unlucky to lose his footing just as he was about to pull the trigger. This resulted in the ball landing for Lee Fraser who struck his shot into the side netting.
Jags opened the scoring in the 9th minute with the ball falling to unmarked Shaun Carrol and his low drive went into the back of the net to give the travelling team a big punishment for failing to mark him. Soon after Carrol almost got a second as his long range effort was just cleared to safety with the keeper and the defence having a mix up. Then Liam Baxter’s backheel set up Andy Low to power a shot which was brilliantly saved by Bowden.
Charlie Rowley’s team were forced into making substitution in the 17th minute as Kris Duncan went off with an injury, with Andrew Fraser replacing him. Craig McGovern and Lee Fraser combined beautifully with some nice quick one-two’s, which ended with Fraser not getting the final product as his shot rattled wide.
Liam Baxter’s diving header was finger-tipped behind by Bowden to deny the striker the chance to score. A free kick from outside of box went to Scott Adams who was given loads of space but shot wide of the target. Just before the break Buckie were given a major warming with Stuart Soane blazing his shot from close range over the bar.
Half Time: Buckie Thistle 1-0 Forres Mechanics
After the interval Chris Angus unleashed an unbelievable effort from 30 yards which looked goal bound, but Bowden made a tremendous save to tip it over the crossbar. Forres could have equalised when Dachi’s lovely floated cross was headed by Fraser straight into Burr’s arms with the striker’s header lacking power.
Bowden was called into action again with Adams firing a shot which the stopper pushed away. In the 77th minute Chris Angus sprinted down the field to blast the ball through the helpless keeper’s legs to double their lead and wrapped up the victory.
With five minutes remaining of the game Lewis Mackinnon was awarded a second yellow card for another strong late challenge. This excellent result gave another big buzz around the club and shows the great management by the caretaker Managers Graeme Stewart and Lewis Mackinnon.
