In a tense final showdown at North Lodge Park, Cove Rangers pipped Formartine United to the Press and Journal Highland League Trophy. The dramatic last game of the season, winner takes all game, Cove took the lead on 9 mins when Jamie Beagrie grabbed the opener.  Pitmedden, like many other areas around the country experience heavy rain throughout the afternoon but that was not enough to dampen the spirits of the estimated 1200 crowd.

The second half saw Cove continue to dominate and on 63 minutes the game was perhaps put beyond the reach of Formartine.  As Cove streamed into the box, Formartine conceded a penalty but also the double punishment of Stephen Jeffrey being sent off for the foul. The penalty was converted on the rebound by Ryan Stott to put the visitors in pole position and that is how it ended. Having come close, without any joy  in each of the last three seasons Cove fans will take great delight in this last gasp victory bringing the League trophy back to Allan Park for a fourth time.

Elsewhere in the league the bottom of the table positions were decided with Fort William losing an incredible 12 goals to 2, Maclellan scoring Fort's second with a last minute penalty. Brora's Steve Mackay scored a rare double hat-trick scoring six goals on 6, 18, 22, 30, 44, and 83 minutes.  Rothes ended their campaign with a victory at Grant Street beating Lossiemouth by the odd goal in three.  Fort William and Lossiemouth defeats mean that Fort will end the league in last position while Strathspey will achieve 15th place.

A competitive season for Wick Academy ended with a 100% home record at Harmsworth. Wick secured third place in this year’s league with an emphatic 4-1 victory over Deveronvale.  Nairn hopes of jumping above Wick were dashed as they fell to a last day defeat away to Huntly.  In a match heavily affected by torrential rain the home side were the victors with a 3-2 scoreline.

Buckie and Inverurie shared the spoils at Victoria Park with both goals coming mid way through the second half.  Turriff ended their season with a win against Clachnacuddin in Inverness putting the icing on the cake following on from their Aberdeenshire Shield victory midweek.  In the other game in today’s programme Fraserburgh ended the league campaign jumping up another place to end the league in 6th spot.  The Brochers will be delighted with their end to the 2012/13 season defeating Keith by 3 goals to nil at Kynoch Park.  Strathspey and outgoing champions Forres Mechanics finished their season last week.
