Midfielder Beeston goes in goal for Clach

Clachnacuddin were up against it before Saturday’s Breedon Aggregates Highland League Cup quarter-final against Formartine at North Lodge Park.

With 19-year-old former Inverness Caley Thistle goalkeeper Aidan MacDonald being taken ill on the team bus arriving at the ground and having to be taken to hospital (later released and allowed to return home), manager Ian Polworth was without an available custodian, with John Campbell unavailable.

Step up to the plate 19-year-old midfielder James Beeston, who was given the No 1 shirt for the day.

See below for an interview with James, as well as Clach boss Polworth and Formartine manager Kris Hunter.

United won 2-1, thanks to a penalty from Neil Gauld and goal from Scott Barbour.

Team news for Saturday 25th February

Highland League Cup Quarter-Finals

Huntly v Brora Rangers
Huntly bounced back from their mauling at the hands of Cove to gain creditable draws against Clach and Formartine. Kieran Adams is cup tied and Paul Napier is out with a hamstring strain for the visit of Brora. Neil McVitie is still recovering from concussion and Blair Johnston is out with glandular fever.

Brora's title challenge has gained momentum after excellent away victories over Keith and Forres, and they continue their Highland League Cup defence at Christie Park. Joe Malin and Paul Brindle are the only injury absentees for the visitors.

Formartine Utd v Clach
Formartine struck late to grab a point at Huntly in midweek and they take on Clach at North Lodge Park in the League Cup Quarter-Finals. Neil Gauld and Conor Gethins could return to the starting line-up after being on the bench at Christie Park.

Clach will be without John Campbell, Ryan Mackintosh, Michael Finnis, Martin Callum and Macdonald. Stuart Leslie is offshore, but David Mcgurk returns to the squad, while James Ross is ineligible for the cup.

Nairn County v Turriff Utd
Nairn recorded a superb win at Deveronvale on Wednesday night after playing most of extra time with nine men. Wayne Mackintosh, Gregg Main and Jordan Macrae are all suspended for the visit of Turriff, while Paul Macleod is doubtful with a head knock. Gary Kerr, Calum Ednie and Jamie McKay are all available again and return to the squad.

Turriff recorded an excellent victory at Wick in the last round and will look to continue that away form at Station Park. They have doubts over Kevin Main, David Booth, Darren Wood and Chris Herd.

Deveronvale squad update: five put on transfer list

Deveronvale FC released the following statement today:

"With a very disappointing exit from the Breedon Highland League Cup on Wednesday night, we have seven league games left to complete this season. Those seven games will be used to give game time to the players who have committed to the club for next season and to try to bring in some new faces.

As fans have likely heard, all players were offered new, performance based contracts towards the end of last month and a number of players have indicated that they are not prepared to accept these. The club understands that accepting this change in contractual terms is a significant decision and appreciates the support of the players who have now signed new contracts.

The players who have not signed to date have been placed on the transfer list. These players are: Scott Fraser, Scott Begg, Kevin Souter, Steven Fraser and Matthew Mackie. As Keith FC have already advised, Grant Pennet and Bradley Manson have agreed to join Keith after the expiry of their contracts at the end of June."

Vale v Nairn tie postponed

Today's scheduled Breedon Highland League Cup First Round tie between Deveronvale and Nairn County has been postponed, due to ongoing drainage problems at Princess Royal Park.

The match will now take place on Wednesday 22nd February at 8pm.
