No points deduction for Buckie Thistle or Formartine

Buckie Thistle have been given the all clear at a Highland League management committee meeting tonight, no action will be taken against them or Formartine United after they allegedly named ineligible players in their squads on Saturday.

The Jags can now clinch the championship with a win over Strathspey Thistle at Victoria Park on Saturday.

Buckie sweat over possible point deduction that could wreck title hopes

Buckie are set to learn on Thursday whether a potential breaking of rules will lead to a point deduction that could scupper their title hopes.

A meeting of the league management committee has been called to discuss whether Thistle were wrong to list Callum Murray as a substitute in Saturday’s 0-0 draw at Formartine.

Murray, an unused sub at North Lodge Park, was recalled from a loan at Deveronvale last week.

Rules apparently state that any player who moves after March is not eligible to play.

The Jags could be fined £500 and docked three points if found guilty.

Buckie president Garry Farquhar claims they have done everything “above board” and sought advice from Highland League secretary Rod Houston.

Thistle are favourites to win the title on Saturday - should they remain on the same points tally. They play bottom club Strathspey in their final game and a win would see them leapfrog Brora into first place.

Team news for matches on Saturday 15th April

Clach v Fraserburgh
Clach complete their league campaign against Fraserburgh at Grant Street and they'll be without Martin Callum, Stuart Leslie, Ian Penwright and Struan Scott-Woodhouse. John Campbell returns to the squad and some trialists will be involved as the Under 17 squad are in Manchester for a tournament.

Broch will look to bounce back from their defeat to Buckie in midweek, they travel without Jamie Beagrie and Ryan Cowie, who are both offshore.

Formartine Utd v Buckie Thistle
Formartine could still have a big say in the title race as they face league leaders Buckie at North Lodge Park. The home side bounced back well from their League Cup Final defeat to put five past Rothes in midweek.

Buckie hit five themselves in a superb win at Fraserburgh on Wednesday night, a result that put them in pole position in the title race. Andrew Skinner and Craig Dorrat both miss out with ankle injuries for The Jags, who could win the title with victory tomorrow if Brora and Cove fail to win at Fort and Lossie respectively.

Fort William v Brora Rangers
Ally Stark and Danny Highet have joined the injury list for Fort William as they end their league season at home to Brora. Scott Chisholm and Richard Tawse are missing due to work commitments and Liam Taylor and Michael Corbett are also unavailable. Ewan MacLean returns from injury and there are also welcome returns for Andrew Martin, Michael Gillespie and Mark Gillespie.

Brora are finishing the season very strongly and have won their last five matches without conceding a goal. Scott Houston is injured and is their only absentee for a game they must win to have any chance of winning the title.

Huntly v Forres Mechanics
Huntly take on Forres at Christie Park and Co-Managers Andy Roddie and Tommy Wilson have a fully fit squad to choose from, with the exception of Martin MacDonald.

Graeme Grant is suspended for the visitors, while Ross MacPherson and John Cameron are out injured. Stuart Soane and Graham Fraser return to the squad. Meanwhile, the club signed Islavale midfielder Jordan Milne on a pre-contract agreement this week.

Stewart knows one more win seals title for Buckie

Buckie boss Graeme Stewart admits one more win for his side should see them crowned champions.

Brora are currently top of the Highland League, but have played all of their fixtures this season.

Buckie are two points back and know victory over Strathspey in their final game next Saturday, will see them jump into first.

Cove are level on points with the Jags and also have one match to play - against Lossiemouth next weekend.

But Buckie have a far superior goal difference to their rivals.

If Thistle and Cove finish level on points, the Victoria Park men will take the title.

Stewart said: "We’ve got to win next week. I think any win for us next week wins it – I would agree with that.

"The boys next week will be nervous. There will be a big crowd. They [Strathspey] have nothing to lose. So there is no hand on it until there is a hand on it."

Stewart was speaking after seeing his side draw 0-0 at Formartine. To listen to the full interview, click on the file below.
