Team news for matches on Saturday 5th August

Brora Rangers v Strathspey Thistle
Brora suffered a shock defeat at Huntly on Wednesday night and The Cattachs will hope to bounce back at home to Strathspey. Boss Ross Tokely has a full squad to choose from and could make changes to his starting line-up.

Strathspey were on the end of a goal blitz from Cove in midweek and will need to improve to take anything from the visit to Dudgeon Park. The Jags hope to have striker Gavin Hay involved after he missed the opening two games of the season.

Buckie Thistle v Nairn County
Buckie produced an excellent comeback from two goals down to earn a point at Turriff during the week and they will look to return to winning ways against Nairn at Victoria Park. Kai Ross, Greg Sim, Sean Carroll, Declan Milne and Ross Elder are all out on loan, while Craig Cowie and Sean Wood are both injured.

Nairn produced a superb display to see off Deveronvale last time out, but will travel without the injured Gary Kerr and Gregg Main. Adam Naismith is suspended and his brother Ross unavailable due to work commitments. Goalkeeper Dylan Maclean returns, while Calum Riddell, Jason Morganti and Stephen Mackenzie also miss out.

Clach v Turriff Utd
Clach came from behind to defeat nine-man Lossiemouth on Wednesday night and they'll face Turriff without Martin Callum and John Campbell through injury and the unavailable Ryan Mackintosh and Paul Smith. Sean Webb is also struggling and could face a late fitness test.

Turriff had to settle for a point after Buckie's comeback at The Haugh's in midweek and they'll be without Neale Davidson and Ryan Bruce who are out injured. David Booth is suspended and there will be fitness tests for Louis Myres, Kevin Flett and Scott Miller .

Cove Rangers v Fort William
Cove have started the season with a bang, firing in thirteen goals without reply against Huntly and Strathspey. Nick Gray and Jonny Smith are their only absentees for the 'home' game with Fort William. It's also a big day on Sunday for captain Eric Watson, who has his testimonial match at Links Park in Montrose, where Cove Rangers Allstars will take on a team of Tayside Legends.

Fort battled well to come from two down against Rothes in midweek, only to lose out to a late Kris Duncan strike. John Treasurer and Danny Highet both miss this one due to hamstring injuries.

Betfred League Cup: Buckie Th 0 Dundee Utd 3

The Scottish Championship favourites swept aside the Highland league champions in the Betfred Cup at Victoria Park.

Goals from McMullan, King and Durnan were enough for Dundee United to take the three points, leaving them in a nice position to get out of the group.

This was the second defeat for the Jags in the tournament and they travel to Dens Park to face Dundee on Saturday in the hope of keeping their slim cup hopes alive.

The first chance fell to ex Celtic midfielder Paul McMullan when his effort from inside the area was saved superbly by Daniel Bell to prevent the Tangerines from taking the lead.

The experienced James Keatings fired a free kick from 25 yards out narrowly over the bar minutes after the McMullan chance.

The deadlock was broken 17 minutes in after a mix up with Lewis Mackinnon and John Maitland meant the cross couldn’t be cleared and McMullan volleyed home 8 yards out.

Hibs loanee Sam Stanton then teed up ex-Hearts winger Billy King, and from outside the area he rifled an effort low beyond Bell to double the Dundee side’s lead.

Buckie’s first chance fell midway through the half but McLeod couldn’t generate enough power on his header from a Chris Angus thow in.

The Highland League champions were unlucky as some neat one-two passes allowed Copeland to send Angus through on goal, but Lewis was quick off his line to prevent the forward from cutting the deficit.

With 10 minutes to go before the break centre half Mark Durnan rose highest in the Buckie area to head a third from Keatings' corner.

Minutes after the third another Keatings corner caused a whole lot of trouble as captain William Edjenguele headed an effort goalward, however it was cleared off the line by Andrew Skinner.

Somehow United never added to their lead when McMullan put it on a plate for King at the back post, but the winger couldn’t get a connection on the ball.

Bell was then quick off his line to deny Congolese striker Patrick N’Koyi, who was through one on one with the keeper.

Buckie’s best chance of the half fell just minutes before the break, but Mcleod couldn’t beat the Southampton loanee Harry Lewis.

The Highland League side kept it tight in the second half and prevented United creating very much, with Bell saving the only clear cut chance of the half from Stanton.

There was a worrying moment for Tangerine’s boss Ray McKinnon as forward James Keatings had to be stretchered off the park after a challenge with a Buckie defender, which reduced the Terrors to 10 men.

Captain Fraser had an audacious effort in the dying minutes but he couldn't trouble Lewis in the visitor's goal.

Buckie fought hard but the class of the full time opposition was clear to see and they ran out comfortable winners in the end.

Team news for matches on Saturday 29th July

The 2017/18 Highland League season kicks off this afternoon and champions Buckie Thistle will have a real fight on their hands to try and retain their title. A lot could depend on whether the Jags can hold onto HFL player of the year Kevin Fraser.

Cove Rangers and Brora Rangers fought all the way to the final day last season and are sure to be challenging again this term. Brora have added some serious firepower to an already potent attack with the signing of Craig Gunn from Elgin City, while Cove have added Ryan Strachan and Jamie Masson to their midfield to compensate for the huge loss of Blair Yule to Arbroath.

Formartine, Fraserburgh and Forres have all made good additions to their squads and will hope to improve on their top six finishes last term, while it will be fascinating to see how the 12 summer signings settle in at Rothes and how far they can climb the table.

Team news for tomorrow’s games:

Buckie Thistle v Clach

The Highland League Championship flag will be unfurled at Victoria Park before Buckie face Clach and the Jags will be without Craig Cowie and Sean Wood with long term injuries. Chris Angus and Drew Copeland are suspended and Sean Carroll and Ross Elder are both on loan to Deveronvale. Ross Salmon and Declan Milne are also on loan to Dyce Juniors and East End respectively.

Clach have added experience to their defence with the captures of Martin MacDonald and Sean Webb. They’re without Martin Callum, John Campbell, David McGurk, Liam Shewan and Fraser Robertson through injury and the unavailable Ryan Mackintosh. Daniel Maclennan is suspended and Struan Scott-Woodhouse is away to live in Dubai.

Cove Rangers v Huntly

Cove boss John Sheran has a full squad to choose from apart from Mitch Megginson, who is suspended. Summer signings Ryan Strachan and Jamie Masson could make their full debuts for the 'home' side.

Huntly also have a fully fit squad for the short trip to Harlaw Park and could hand first starts to new boys Martin Charlesworth and Mike Ewen up front.

Deveronvale v Turriff Utd

Deveronvale kick off their campaign with a home derby against Turriff and will be minus the suspended Steven Davidson and Liam Forbes. William Pauline, Michael Dunn, Ross Elder and Sean Carroll could all make their Vale debuts.

Turriff have several players missing, including Aaron Sherman, Chris Herd, Jordi Walker, Leszek Nowosielski, Russell McBride and Cammy Booth. Liam Strachan is also doubtful, while Scott Miller, Kevin Flett and Calum Reid could all make their debuts for the club.
